A primary school Vetrunge in Kaunas brought in a sound artist to teach children to speak fluently and expressively, gain successful experience of communicating.
22 second-graders (8-9 year old pupils) started their journey into expanding their vocabulary and enriching their language and confidence as well as having fun.
The most impressive experience was - the sound expedition. Children were invited to listen to sounds in 7 locations.
Tools used were ears, a notebook and a pen;
The goal was to listen to the sounds, capture and record them.They whole team went to the down town for 4 hours to listen to the sounds and write them down in the notebooks. The learners followed by their teacher and a creative professional visited such spots: the railway station, underground pass through the street, open market, a square, Vytautas Magnus University – the Turkish language lecture, a theatre and a Church where children were listen and to interpret what they heard. They then needed to invent a new word that best captured these different sounds and atmospheres.
Another task was to record sounds of the paintings. Children selected 3 paintings which they voiced and recorded the sound.
The project was called “Kaip auga zodis" (“How does a word grow?” in English) and the pupils dramatically improved their literacy skills. According to their teacher - dictionary became the most popular book in the class.
